Multiswitch failures

There seems to be a rash of multiswitches failing lately. I've replaced 6 of them in a period of about a month. I used to replace maybe one in 3 months. What i find every time is the switch is giving everything on F1/G1 fine but nothing from the F2 sat. I wonder if these switches run hotter when they are selecting Sat B? On switches where some ports weren't used, those ports still worked fine and when i connected my meter to a port that was in use there was usually an RF level on the meter but no Ebno reading or sometimes no signal at all. With all the channels moving to the F2 satellite it's possible the switches failed long ago but nobody noticed since there were so few channels they might have watched on F2 but i'm thinking that the switches are failing when they spend a lot of time switched to sat B.

Re: Multiswitch failures

The older 24 Volt ms seem to be failing quite a bit here too. Just did another one yesterday. But we have also noticed the 1st gen of XKU lnb's are now failing too.
Almost every service call for poor signal or loss of channels relates to the lnb the last few months now.

As per Aug 2017 "Epidemic of bad multiswitches", maybe the global warming heat is part of the issue? Or does Shaw just overload F2 signals occasionally? Have had more people complaining about HD TSN issues last couple months.
And yes, F2 is usually the issue with the LNB too. Does the failure follow the sport fans?

I have replaced an above amount of switches as well, however, they have all been from accounts with a PVR. The second line (tuner 2)seems to fail, however when its put into tuner one its fine. It would seem that its a bad receiver but with a MS change its back to working as it should. Who knows? Maybe a coincidence.

Re: Multiswitch failures

Had another service call today where the customer thought for sure his multi switch had failed again after being replaced only a month ago. I went over and checked it out and it looked like the PVR wasn't getting any vertical polarities from the F2 sat. The other receivers were fine and if i unplugged the cables for that PVR at the multiswitch everything was fine checking it with my meter. I noticed with the cables plugged back in though, if i unplugged the HDMI cable the red light on the receiver would go out. When i would go to plug the HDMI cable back in i could see little sparks between it and the receiver as i tried to find the slot so right away i knew the problem was A/C leakage from the TV. I got out my volt meter and i could measure 80 volts A/C between the TV and the receiver. The TV had a 3 wire grounded power cord so i thought maybe the grounding at the multi switch could be the problem but it was grounded to a 12 gauge copper wire which was connected to a much heavier copper ground from the electrical panel. So i had the customer find a 2 wire extension cord that he had already carved off the bump in the plastic that prevented you from plugging in a 3 pin A/C plug and that solved the problem. All channels now worked. I told the customer he had too much A/C leakage in his plasma TV and he should replace it with a new model. He at first thought he would just continue to use it that way but i thought the leakage current might be what had destroyed the previous multi switch so it would be best to replace the TV.
